Heavy rain cleared the air and washed the boat down as we began our adventure, but the cabins were warm and cozy and the hot chocolate was steaming. With word of whale sightings to the west, we cut through Thatcher and Pole passes, aiming for Haro Strait. We passed harbor porpoises and many birds along the way. Flocks of alcids dotted the straits, pigeon guillemots were scattered about inner islands, and huge gatherings of gulls, cormorants, alcids and more were everywhere we looked along the coastline of Henry Island.
It was just south of Kellet Bluff that we met up with the famous Indy (T65A5)! We love this little whale and his penchant for mischief and wandering, and were happy to be able to spend the afternoon with him. He was finishing up a kill as we arrived, as evident by the growing surface slick, gathered gulls, and moonwalking. He then explored the western shoreline of Henry Island, the fall foliage along the steep slopes making for a stunning autumn backdrop.
We visited Spieden Island on the cruise home. All three exotic species were visible: mouflon sheep, fallow deer, and sika deer. We also saw MANY bald eagles, some of which were actively feeding! One appeared to have a rockfish and the other either a small bird or forage fish. We spied Stellers swimming amongst the bull kelp too!
We love this season of the year, as there are so few boats on the water, and it sometimes feels like we have the islands all to ourselves. The Island Explorer 5 is truly the perfect adventure vessel for exploring the beauty of this sea, no matter the season. Well dressed guests can enjoy embracing the elements on the outer decks, while those seeking a little extra comfort can weather the rain from inside heated cabins. It offer the best of both worlds, perfect for autumn days like today!
