What a gorgeous, moody Pacific Northwest afternoon! A consistent light breeze set ripples across the otherwise calm waters we encountered on our adventure today, with the occasional shower sending droplets bouncing off the surface. Trailing mist wove though the treetops, and a blanket of gray settled in over the sea.
We found orcas!!! Captain Carl followed his hunch and took us north today, allowing us to explore the outer island chain and cross paths with the T35As! It was a sharp-eyed passenger who sighted them first, their small black fins subtly slicing through the swell just west of Sucia. We enjoyed our time with this family of five, Lester and Opal sticking close together while the younger siblings formed their own group. Little T35A4 broke off towards the end, testing the waters with a mini solo adventure while the rest of the pod continued on.
Other highlights of the day included watching two bald eagles swiftly fly across the bow towards some swimming alcids near Jack Island, witnessing the dramatic antics of several Steller sea lions on a buoy near Sinclair, spying harbor porpoise near Point Lawrence, and marveling at the countless flocks of gulls and common murres throughout the day!
