Today was glassy calm we had two species of whales, a humpback and minke! Double header!
We started west with serene views and ideal spotting conditions. With an earlier morning report, we ventured between McArthur and Salmon Banks where we first found a humpback. After snapping a photo of her flukes we identified her as Victory, a whale who has been feeding around this area for a few weeks. Soon we also spotted a minke whale!
The two whales mirrored each other’s movements, traveling closing together. It was interesting seeing these species so close and unbothered by each other’s presence. Finally the minke broke off and passed behind us, giving us some awesome views. From there we continued with Victory as she circled around the area. We only got one look at her flukes as her dives were mostly shallow, but she treated us to lots of surface time. It was great seeing this frequent floater.
Pushing back east we saw lots of bird action at Smith and Minor Including gulls, cormorants, and even a brown pelican! There were lots of harbor seals hauled out on minor, and sleepy Steller sea lion on Lawson Reef channel marker. It was such a peaceful day with harbor porpoise right outside the marine welcoming us back home. We love Fall whale watching!
