The perfect way to start a Sunday... on the water with Bigg's killer whales. And not just any pod, the beloved T123s! This group includes matriarch T123 Sidney and her three offspring Stanley, Lucky, and Darcy. We encountered this pod in the heart of the San Juan Islands after enjoying a scenic cruise. They had just exited Eastsound and were taking us further west. We continued cruising with them through the Wasp Islands and got lots of great looks.
The group was hugging the shoreline making for a dramatic backdrop, and Stanley's massive dorsal fin wowed many of our guests onboard. They spent quite a bit of time on the surface, and were in a travel mode besides a quick pitstop where Sidney spy hopped! After lots of time, we departed the pod and made our way back east, stopping to admire gulls, cormorants, and harbor seals hauled out on some rocks. It was such a great morning!
What a beautiful evening! We had a warm breeze and blue skies taking off the dock from Anacortes. First off Captain Carl took us around the back side of Guemes Island where we stopped to admire two mature bald eagles and an eaglet hanging out in their nest! Then our good wild life karma continued as we continued North and crossed into Canada where we met up with the T123 pod. We were able to watch the speed further North and swim in the current lines, but eventually had to make the turn home! On our way home we stopped by Patos Island lighthouse where we were able to see two sets of mom and calf humpback whale pairs! We spent most of our time with Big Mama and her new calf who was putting on a show! She was cartwheeling, breaching and causing huge splashes! It was amazing. Big Mama and her baby eventually swam underneath our boat and we had to continue the other way! So eventually we made the turn back home, stopping to see some stellar sea lions along the way. But it was a beautiful night with amazing wildlife action! A trip to remember for sure.
Whale wishes,
