Calm overcast skies greeted us this afternoon as we made our way out to Rosario Strait. After pausing at Colville Island to hang out with some harbor seals, we pushed out into the strait of Juan de Fuca to expand our search. At Salmon bank we spotted a shy minke whale who was intent on feeding. After three surfacings with this animal we decided to continue west to a report near Victoria. It was a long journey, but well worth it, because as we reached Baynes Channel near Discovery Island, we met up with the T75Bs! Mother and matriarch T75B pebbles led the way with her three calves, ten year old T75B2 Jasper, eight year old T75B3 Rubble, and six year old T75B4 Petra following closely behind. After a few amazing surfacings with these animals, some proposing, and even some tail slapping, we waved goodbye to this small family and headed back east. Calm seas guided us all the way back to the dock after a phenomenal afternoon in the Salish Sea!

The sun was just beginning to peak out behind the clouds as we set off this evening. We made our first wildlife stop of the day at bird rocks where we spotted a harbor seal swimming among the bull kelp as well as a sea otter resting on the surface! Continuing on, we pushed up the west side of San Juan Island until we reached the same group of killer whales we were with this morning, the T75Bs! This group of four swam in a tight knit formation as they made their way slowly north. We had absolutely pristine conditions this evening, and the slowly setting sun allowed for rich and vivid color to paint the sea as well as the islands. We hung with this group for several amazing surface respirations before pushing off and heading for Speiden Island. Here, we saw Mouflon sheep grazing on the grasses of Spieden‘s coast as well as a mature bald eagle perched on a stump on the islands slopes. Taking a gorgeous inner island route back home, we finally passed back through Guemes Channel to round out a gorgeous evening on the water!

We had a blast spending time with this family of Bigg's killer whales! If you share our love for orca whales, we are guaranteeing orca whales on our June 20th 10-12 hour Extended Range Tour. We still have space remaining to join this ultimate whale watching adventure!
