Another hot day hit the PNW as we headed out into the Salish sea. We started out heading south in Rosario strait and getting some beautiful scenery with Mount Baker in the distance and Burrows Island lighthouse setting up a great photo op. We continued our search into the big waters in the Strait of Juan de Fuca as we cruised west toward Hein bank. It didn't take long before Captain Carl found us a pair of eastbound humpback whales.
Right away we knew it was a mom and calf pair, and they began giving us some great looks. We cruised with them for some time and came close to some looks at their flukes but never got to see them out of the water. We left them heading toward San Juan Island and cruised over to Smith Island where we found a few tufted puffins, rhinoceros auklets, a Pacific loon and a bunch of pigeon guillemots.
We headed north after that to Lawson reef and found two Steller sea lions on a marker Buoy before heading up to Bird rocks. Scanning the refuge, we found some harlequin ducks and our furry little otter friend Otis. We then cruised home, and it was such a beautiful day out on the water.
