Our trip today was filled with sun and fun in the Salish Sea. Early reports of potential whales near Bellingham drew us north around the backside of Guemes Island. After arriving on scene and taking photos, our team was able to positively identify a member of J-pod, J-16 "Slick". After confirming this identification, we departed the area and continued on our journey.
We headed south to Bird Rocks and found a bunch of harbor seals, two bald eagles, and black turnstones. Continuing on, we found three gray whales feeding off the west side of Whidbey Island! Its exciting to see just one, so three was an awesome sight. We watched feeding action and saw lots of flukes from these whales. We snapped photos and are hoping to get some positive ID's soon!
After our whale encounters, we headed up to Lawson Reef just in time to see a Steller sea lion playing around the navigation marker. We continued in from there, passing a bald eagle near Washington Park before heading back into Cap Sante. What a fantastic weekend for whales!
