With reports of whales in Rosario Strait, we set off on the search. Turning up Bellingham Channel, we soon spotted several dark black dorsal fins against the placid gray surface. After a few photos to confirm, we realized we were on scene with a lovely Bigg's killer whale family, the T46Bs. Leading the way was T46B Raksha, and traveling with her were her kiddos T46B2 Akela, T46B3 Sedna, T46B4 Quiver, T46B6 Sol, T46B7 Tala, and little T46B8 Pi born just a few months ago! Akela and her little one T46B2B Takaya spent some time traveling a bit further away from the family, which might indicate Akela getting ready to seperate from her momma soon. Her little sister Sedna also had her own calf with her, T46B3A Monroe, who was born just last year. We traveled with this family slowly north in just stunning conditions and discussed the inspiring story of T46 Wake, Raksha's mother. Because of how many calves and juveniles were present, we also discussed killer whale development and the cultural learning that takes place in their first phase of life.

After lots of great looks we waved goodbye to Raksha and her pod and turned to the south. On the northern end of Sinclair we paused for some Steller sea lions, watching as one leaped up onto the base of the marker with impressive strength and agility. Cruising on, we made a small stop at Bird Rocks before turning into the shoreline of Lopez Island where we came across a gray whale! We watched as this individual fed in the bay and discussed gray whale populations and trends here on the west coast. After our visit, we scooted back across Rosario Strait and back into Guemes Channel. Such a lovely day exploring the Salish Sea!
