Fog once again settled across the Salish Sea as we headed out of Cap Sante, Anacortes. We started south in Rosario Strait, the fog slowly rising giving us some great visibility. Without any wind the seas were flat and calm! We slowed down at Castle Rock and saw a couple belted kingfishers, some great blue herons, and a few harbor seals hauled up out of the water. We continued our search from there across the many different shallow banks along the Strait of Juan de Fuca, past Hein Bank and onward to the west side of Constance Bank.
It was here we discovered a lone humpback whale feeding heavily among thousands of birds. It took some time but we really dialed it in and even got a look at its flukes. We were able to determine this whale was the 2021 calf of Sirius, a humpback that has frequently been seen in these waters. We headed back to the east and got to see some Steller sea lions on the Hein Bank marker before we pushed back towards Anacortes. A great start to another month of whale watching!
