Juan de Fuca today was like a lake today, the calm between storms. With glassy seas, crisp air, and stunning visibility we set out from Cap Sante. We started with a bald eagle sighting on a red navigational marker near Shannon Point, it took flight and showed off its impressive six foot wingspan. We then worked our way over to Bird Rocks where a large Steller bull and some harbor seals were diving amongst the cormorants, gulls and black turnstones.
We continued our search through the inner islands, spying flocks of Bonaparte’s gulls, pigeon guillemots, loons and more. We cut through Thatcher, Upright, and Cattle passes, letting the Olympic mountain range guide us south. As we crossed Salmon Bank, Captain Tyson spied two dorsals on the horizon! It turned out to be Bigg’s killer whales Indie (T65A5) and Jude (T49A2). These two males both have reputations for their misadventures, so it seemed a bit fitting that they’d found each other. We watched as they meandered amongst bird mills, chased loons and possibly caught something during a deeper dive. It was a memorable encounter!
Just as we were leaving the Bigg’s, we got word of minkes nearby! We enjoyed the company of two actively lunge feeding minke whales near McArthur Bank, watching as they send the bird miles scattering. It was an incredible finale to a wonderful afternoon on the water!
