Bigg's Killer Whales (T36B1s & T46C2)
Humpback Whale

What a moody, misty morning! Waves of fog rolled in across the heart of the Salish Sea, and we cruised in and out of them as we searched for life, passing countless flocks of common murres, gulls and rhinoceros auklets as we went.
The whales took us west today, but it was worth the distance covered for the opportunity to visit with both Bigg’s killer whales and humpback whales. The T46B1s and T46C2 had taken down a kill while we cruised with them, their behavior changing from scouting to milling and killing before our eyes. The water was glassy, the gulls circled overhead, and the whales’ exhalations hung in the air. When they finished their meal, they continued on and so did we.
We briefly met a mature humpback whale on the way home. It’s dives were nine minutes, so we enjoyed a surface interval before turning for home. Perhaps it was intentionally trying to remain subtle with Bigg’s around.
The cruise home was beautiful, and we enjoyed smooth seas throughout our adventure, a true gift when exploring Juan de Fuca.
