What an afternoon! Our journey started off heading through the inner islands, with a beautiful slow down in Pole Pass, one of my favorite areas to explore. We then heard reports of whales out by Sidney Canada and decided it was our best/only option to try and pursue those killer whales! Just as we were arriving up there, the whales were lost, so we had to search hard but luckily with the help of another whale watching boat, we were able to not only find but get great views of the T65B family. We saw several great views of the pod and were able to observe how fast they can travel and change direction before all of a sudden hitting the breaks and grouping up close together. But since we made the long haul up there, we had to make the turn back towards the dock, as the whales were heading further away from home. Just as we crossed back into the US, Captain Carl spotted us a humpback whale! This whale showed us their fluke and we were able to ID it was Meqe, a whale that first came to the Salish Sea in 2018. After seeing the whales fluke, we had to continue towards the dock. We stopped to see Mouflon sheep, Sika deer, and Bald eagles along Spieden Island, and then really pushed our time and had to head home! It was a beautiful cruise back to Anacortes with views of Mt. Baker and the Washington State Ferries as well!
Whale wishes,
Clare
