With no reports this morning we made our way south down Rosario Strait to begin the search in the Strait of Juan de Fuca. As we passed by south Lopez, we got word of a humpback spotted to the north. Making the decision, we turned up Cattle Pass and into San Juan channel after visiting with some sea lions on whale rocks. Traveling up through the San Juan islands was absolutely gorgeous! We made our way toward Spieden Island and Stuart before crossing into Canadian waters. Far up north, just off South Pender Island, we saw the blows of our whale in the distance! After getting on scene and grabbing an initial ID shot, we determined that this whale was MMX0167 Stitch! We cruised with this whale as he made his way east, getting lots of absolutely beautiful looks in the morning light. Because we were so far from home, we turned back south and headed for home. What an amazing kickstart to our day!
This afternoon, we headed north to see if we could try to find our humpback from this morning. Making it up to east point, we once again spotted a blow on the horizon. Here, the current was churning and mixing fast. Gulls, porpoise, and even a harbor seal nearby signaled lots of food below the surface. As we got better acquainted with this whale, who turned out once again to be Stitch, we got gorgeous looks at his tail exhalations and flukes on his deep dives. We followed this whale slowly south until it was time to head home. We waved goodbye to Stitch and worked our way back towards Cap Sante Marina.
This evening we journeyed once again north, visiting first with some sea lions and cormorants on a red navigational marker north of Sinclair. Continuing north, we reached Barnes and Clark Islands where we spotted an adorable mom+pup harbor seal pair and two mature bald eagles. Further north off the coast of Lummi, our whale from this afternoon, Stitch, made his way slowly south. We joined up with him and traveled slowly against the current. Stitch made steady progress, taking two deep dives while we were on scene and showing off his gorgeous flukes. After our visit with Stitch, we cruised back to the dock. Along the way we spotted another eagle tale flight along the coast of Guemes Island. It was an all around gorgeous day with the largest species of whale in our waters. We love spending time with humpbacks!
