With the current heat wave, the best place to be is on the water! Today we enjoyed watching one of our absolute favorite humpback whales.

Cruising up north today, we started our search heading toward Sinclair Island. We stopped for a charming visit with some Stellar sea lions resting on a Navigation Marker before continuing on. Pushing up into the strait of Georgia, we came across two humpback whales— and not just any two humpback whales. This pair turned out to be none other than Big Mama and her 8th calf!

This humpback is an absolute icon in the Salish Sea and we were so thrilled to be able to get to spend time with her and her youngster. Big Mama was the first humpback whale documented in the Salish Sea in the late 1990s after nearly a century of this species' absence in our waters. It was so special seeing her return with yet another calf. Because we were far from home, after plenty of good looks we had to say goodbye to this famous pair and head back down south. The cruise back to the dock was clear, calm, and sunny! What an absolutely stunning day in the Salish Sea!
