Happy Mother's Day Weekend! The celebration began with a famous female humpback whale, Divot! Divot is a mother and a grandmother and we had a great day on the water watching her.
With calm seas and sunny skies, it was a beautiful spring day out on the Salish Sea. We cruised through the heart of the San Juans, enjoying the coastline views in Thatcher and Wasp passes and Spieden Chanel. We slowed at Spieden to visit with Steller sea lions, a lone California sea lion, several bald eagles, and a gaggle of Canada geese. We continued into Haro Strait, spying every harbor porpoise in the glassy conditions. Just west of Limn Kiln lighthouse, in the middle of Haro Strait, we found Divot the humpback whale! This twenty-two year old grandmother is a Salish Sea regular, and it’s been so nice having her back in the area for another season. She wowed us with some dramatic soundings, and one surprise close pass! The cruise home was beautiful, and we crossed paths with a mama and daddy goose taking their four baby goslings from Spieden to San Juan island.
