Our Memorial Day whale watch was packed with wildlife! We started with a slowdown along the eastern coastline of Guemes where swallows were soaring, pigeon guillemots were nesting, turkey vultures were circling, and sea stars were clinging to the intertidal zone. We stopped to admire a bald eagle’s nest, and marveled at an eaglet poking its head above the edge! Continuing north, we slowed at a navigational marker near Sinclair to watch Steller sea lions bask in the sun, and then continued towards the northern shoreline of Orcas Island.
The whales brought us to Waldron today, with the T124Ds and T100s (minus T100E) swimming along the current lines towards Patos. They wowed us with some surprise passes, then led us past the scenic Patos Island Lighthouse. It was a delightful encounter with these seven Bigg’s killer whales.
The ride home was gorgeous, and we stopped along the Sucia shoreline to admire a pair of bald eagles and many pigeon guillemots. We slowed again just north of Eagle Harbor on Cypress, where we enjoyed close looks of the intertidal zone and the emerald waters of Bellingham Channel.
