Baby, baby! We were fawning over one of the newest additions to the West Coast Bigg’s population on our adventure today. Little T49A7, sighted for the first time earlier this month, was tucked between its mother and siblings as they traveled south down Rosario Strait. This little nugget is Nan’s (T49A) seventh offspring! We saw Nat, Neptune, Nebula & Charlie in the gathering today, older brothers Noah and Jude were not present. The T49s weren’t the only Bigg’s in the mix! Tierna (T36A1) and her son Drift were also tucked in with Nan’s pod.

We also got to visit with a gray whale today. It was keeping a pretty low profile in Rosario Strait, perhaps due to the orcas nearby, but we were lucky enough to see an impressive sounding. We so appreciated hearing the excitement from today’s guests onboard, who, from the sound of it, appreciated this gorgeous gray whale just as much as the new orca calf. You guys are welcome back any day!

Other highlights of the day included spying flocks of rhinoceros auklets and pigeon guillemots inside of Thatcher Pass, visiting with harbor seals and a large Steller sea lion at Williamson Rocks, catching glimpses of elusive harbor porpoises near Lawson Reef, and enjoying a scenic cruise through the eddies outside of Deception Pass.

We wish this calf safe swimming as it continues to explore the Salish Sea!
